. the other case is from new york, it challenges the defense of marriage act that requires the government to deny federal benefits to legally married gay couples. it was passed in 1996 and signed by president clinton. reaction in san francisco's castro district included a range of emotions. yesterday's decision means same sex couples in california must put marriage plans on hold. they could have started marrying pleadly if the court denied review. activists say they feel some momentum from the november elections. >> three states legalized same sex marriage just a month ago. the tide is shifting. >> i want it to be tackled. i want to get married and i want to be married in any state. >> many people say they are happy the court will address the issue but they say they understand that the possibility the ruling may go against the very thing they are fighting for. >> opponents of same sex marriage believe the justices will see things there way. >> we are confident that the court is going to up hold the right of the people to amend their own constitution. >> the man who wrote proposition
health officials are warning of gay men about a recent uptick in meningitis cases in new york city. there is been about 12 cases of the disease were reported among gay men in new york in the past year. meningitis can be transmitted during intimate or sexual contact with someone who was infected. it also be transmitted by sneezing, coughing or sharing drinks are food with an infected person. although there has not been any recent cases in san francisco. health officials are asking those who plan to travel or have recently traveled to new york to consult with their doctor. >> with warnings that this flu season could be one of the worst in recent years to restore farmers is in the bay area will be giving free flu shots to children ages 4 to 18. >> the free vaccination program is called shoe the flu. it is designed to improve or rock community health. the program runs through the end of the year and is being funded by the page family foundation. again it is free. the reynauds took on the denver broncos at the coliseum. the broncos quarterback jason manning through his 30 touchdown bidd
